Samantha Magdaleno is a third generation Detroit resident who is guided by her unyielding dedication to fight against residential displacement and racial inequity.
Samantha has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas Pan American. During her time at UT she founded the Student RGV Community DREAMers, worked with the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, and served as an executive board member on the LGBTQ Alliance, Voices of Planned Parenthood, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Eta Omicron Nu Honors. Working with the NIYA while attending a school within miles of the Mexican border, Sam was able to obtain first hand experience with the inhumane immigration laws that choke communities, and her empathetic stance guides her daily on her fight against colonialism.
After graduation, Samantha took her activism to the streets, participating in grass-roots movements across the nation in order to teach communities how to organize against the currently oppressive immigration system. In 2013, she participated in an act of civil disobedience and was arrested while at the Department of Labor where she was attempting to prevent two men from being unjustly deported. She was able to beat her charges and prove her innocence, and the two men she defended were able to obtain Visas and are currently working and thriving here in the United States.
